Don’t ingest caffeine, wear it: The rise of caffeine in skincare
Sieun LeeShare
I’m addicted to caffeine. I’ve tried caffeine-sober streaks — herbal-tea alternatives, decaf experiments — but after multiple failures, I surrendered. A coffee a day keeps the doctor away (not true, but I like the delusion).
Starting my morning with a hot Americano, I realized: I found myself liking every aspect of coffee: The roasted scent, the mocha-mousse color (very on trend), the bitter aftertaste — all of it. That daily craving led to an unexpected discovery.
Caffeine as skincare.
Caffeine in skincare isn’t exactly new. Coffee is rich in antioxidants and long praised for its brightening effects. DIY coffee scrubs — made in kitchen sinks across the internet — had their moment.
But dermatologists generally agree: Food-grade coffee grounds aren’t ideal for your face. They’re often too coarse, can be irritating to sensitive skin, and there maybe unknown preservatives which may cause flare-ups.
So why the buzz?
Here’s what caffeine actually does for your skin:
#1. Caffeine helps to reduce puffiness by constricting blood vessels and decreasing inflammation — which is why it’s a star in under-eye products. Think of it as a mini espresso shot for tired eyes.
#2. It’s packed with antioxidants. These fight off free radicals, the unstable molecules that contribute to aging and dullness. Caffeine steps in like the overachiever it is, helping your skin look brighter and feel smoother.
#3. Caffeine temporarily tightens and firms skin by boosting microcirculation. It’s not a facelift, but it gives a visible refresh — perfect before stepping into a big meeting or a selfie-heavy brunch.
The perks of caffeine sparked innovation in the skincare industry. And as eye patches and de-puffing creams take center stage, caffeine has become the hero ingredient for skincare.
If you’re new to the game, here are a few editor-approved, beginner-friendly caffeinated skincare picks to add to your routine:
1. INKEY List Caffeine Eye Cream – $11.99 (15mL)
Your under-eyes, but make them well-rested. This cult-favorite from The INKEY List is powered by caffeine and Matrixyl 3000, a peptide blend that targets fine lines. Lightweight and budget-friendly, it’s the perfect AM-pick-me-up skincare for puffiness and dark circles.

2. Topicals Faded Eye Masks – $22 (6 Pairs)
More than just eye masks — these are tiny anti-fatigue miracles. Caffeine joins Niacinamide and TXA to brighten, calm, and even tone. Topicals is known for combining clinical skincare with viral design, and these patches are no exception.

3. Kaine Caffètinal Cream – $25 (50mL)
This soothing moisturizer blends caffeine with retinal and panthenol to hydrate and reduce redness. Kaine’s formula is targeted at slow-aging effects and designed for sensitive skin types — making it a new K-skincare essential for that dewy-but-awake look.

From reducing puffiness to brightening tired skin, caffeine is more than just a morning ritual — it’s a skincare essential. As the beauty world continues to wake up to its benefits, so are we.
We’ve been brewing something special — a caffeine-powered eye patch designed for working women who need rejuvenation in a flash. Coming soon in June.
